We all want our teeth to be straight and pearly white, but oral health is about more than nice looking teeth. There are some crucial habits you can take on to improve your dental health and we are here to unveil them! Your teeth will be whiter, breath will be fresher, and oral health will be better by implementing these practices and observances.
#1. Stop Smoking & Dipping

We hear a lot about how tobacco use threatens our lungs, but not as much about oral health. Beyond giving your breath a run for its money, the smoke can discolor your tongue and teeth. Smokers and chewers have an overall higher chance of having weakened teeth, infected gums, and mouth cancer. This is one of the best ways to improve your dental health.
Additionally, quitting tobacco can significantly improve your oral health by reducing the risk of gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancer. By breaking free from tobacco use, you not only protect your teeth and gums but also promote overall well-being and longevity.

#2. Cut Down on Sugar
One of the biggest reasons tooth decay is a problem is sugar, specifically soda drinks and sugary juice. Have you ever heard of “Mountain Dew Mouth”? It’s a big problem. Your mouth’s bacteria feed off of the layer sugar on your teeth and causes bacterial infections, in turn causing cavities/decay.
We’re not suggesting to cut sugar out entirely, but to be more mindful of your intake. Try drinking more water instead of soda or juice. If you want to enjoy a sugary beverage, use a straw to lessen the amount that touches your teeth. Swish some water around or brush your teeth after you’ve consumed something sweet.
#3. Cut Down on Coffee

Cutting down on sugar may be hard, but some might find it impossible to cut down on coffee. It is one of the most beloved drinks in our lives. Unfortunately, the dark-colored drink can cause yellowish stains and get embedded in the ridges and cracks of your enamel. The acid content in coffee will also wear out your enamel. To battle the stain, you can get your teeth whitened.
Similar to sugary drinks, swish water or brush after drinking. Some suggest drinking it through a straw, but this may be a challenge. However, if you can’t resist your morning cup of coffee, consider reducing its frequency or opting for lighter-colored varieties. Additionally, try to limit the amount of time coffee spends in contact with your teeth and follow up with thorough oral hygiene practices to minimize its staining effects.
#4. Purchase the Right Toothbrush & Change It Out Often
With so many options on the market, it can be difficult to know which is best. If you don’t have any special circumstances, the most effective at cleaning are soft-bristled electronic toothbrushes. They perform well without damaging your enamel. Remember to replace your toothbrush head when it becomes worn or old, typically every three months if you brush at least twice a day. This ensures optimal cleaning and prevents the buildup of bacteria on your toothbrush.

#5. Brush Often and Correctly
Brush your teeth in the morning and before bed at night, at the very least. If you can sneak a brushing in after lunch, go for it. Brush for at least 2 minutes! Don’t forget to focus on the ridgeline of your gums and teeth. Brush your tongue for fresher breath.
#6. Floss as Much as You Brush
Flossing is key to getting food particles and tartar out from the crevices. When you don’t, food will rot and tartar will turn to plaque. Your breath will also let people know your flossing skills are subpar. Even if you can only do this before bed, you will have improved your dental health by a wide range!
For those that have sensitive gums/teeth or need another option, water pics work as well. They don’t help as much with tartar, but will usually take care of stuck food particles.
#7. Add an Antibacterial Mouthwash Regimen
This is a great additional way to really give your mouth a fighting chance over bacteria. Swishing some mouthwash can also prevent plaque build-up, as well as curb bad breath.
#8. Use Fluoride Toothpaste
Fluoride has been helping to keep tooth enamel strong and solid for so long that it’s been considered one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century! It is a naturally occurring mineral found in the earth’s crust. Fluoride can often be found in our drinking water. Make sure your toothpaste contains this helpful mineral for healthy teeth!
#9. Practice Good Nutrition

A well-balanced diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables plays a crucial role in promoting optimal dental health. These nutrient-dense foods provide essential vitamins and minerals that support strong teeth and gums. For instance, fruits and vegetables offer valuable stimulation to the gums, helping to maintain their health and resilience. Additionally, the vitamins found in these foods, such as vitamin C, contribute to the repair and maintenance of oral tissues, aiding in the prevention of gum disease and other oral health issues.
Moreover, raw and unprocessed fruits and vegetables contain alkaline properties, which help neutralize acids in the mouth. Often times, we only visit the dentist when something is wrong. Practicing preventative care by visiting your dentist at least 1x a year can help you stay out of that chair in an emergency. Most insurance dental plans cover dental cleanings, x-rays, and checkups. These appointments can make the difference between knowing or not knowing about your dental state.
