Nitrous Oxide is Often Called Laughing Gas
Scared of going to the dentist? You are not alone. Plenty of people avoid important dental visits out of fear. Luckily, Nitrous Oxide or “laughing gas” helps to provide those that are scared or worried some comfort and relief during many procedures.
At Miami Valley Smiles, we use nitrous oxide (laughing gas) as a sedation dentistry service. We want you to be as informed as possible about all our services, so here are 5 facts to know about this option!
1. Laughing Gas is an Easy Option

Before your procedure, nitrous oxide is administered through a small nasal mask, typically taking effect swiftly, inducing a relaxed, dream-like state. This ensures a comfortable experience, particularly for individuals anxious about dental procedures, as they may not remember much about the appointment. Moreover, with laughing gas, you remain conscious and capable of responding, unlike other sedation methods, and no special fasting or medication instructions are required.
You are not technically “all the way under” on laughing gas. You will still be able to respond and breathe on your own. Unlike other pain dulling options out there, nitrous oxide requires no fasting or medication instructions.
2. Laughing Gas can be Easily Adjusted
Unlike other sedation options, nitrous oxide works as the procedure goes on and can be distributed throughout. This allows the dentist to take their time and not rush. IV sedation and general anesthetic require time constraints due to them wearing off. It’s also easily adjustable to your relaxation requirements.
3. Laughing Gas is Tried and Tested
Worried about this treatment. You should know that laughing gas has been around as long as dentists have been seeing patients. It was first used 200 years ago and is now the most common method of sedation dentistry today. The risks of overdosing are only probable when too much gas is administered by an inexperienced dentist.
4. Not Everyone is Suitable for Laughing Gas
Just like with any treatment, it’s not one size fits all. Before you are eligible, your dentist will review your medical history to decide if you are a suitable candidate. Patients that don’t qualify are normally those with a history of respiratory illness, mental health conditions, vitamin B12 deficiency, and women in their first trimester of pregnancy.
It is ideal for individuals with:
- a fear of the sights and sounds of the dentist office (drills, equipment, etc.).
- bad gag reflexes.
- discomforts with personal space.
- general anxiety.
- a physical disability.
- jaw pain or TMJ.
5. Laughing Gas Wears off Quick
Nitrous Oxide wears off so quickly, you should be fine to drive yourself home after the appointment. No need to have a driver! The great thing also is that there are no aftereffects of grogginess or lethargy. No need to take extra time off recovering. You can go about your day as you normally would after your appointment!
Final Thoughts on Laughing Gas
Just like with any type of treatment or medication, the choice will depend upon your preference and eligibility. It has and continues to be a great solution to the looming problem of dental anxiety.
